Elixir Goldilocks Zone
For beginners, the Elixir sweet spot for a deck is between 2.9 and 3.9. Below 2.9 and a beginner will have trouble keeping up with the game play and above 3.9 makes it hard to counter an offense.
DEFENSE
Beginner
Kiting
A Kite is an object that draws a potential attacker off his track. A good example is the low elixir Skeletons - they can move a P.E.K.K.A. between castles which will double the attack from castle archers. Some common Kites are Elixir Golem, Ice Golem, Hog Rider and any other card that advances to a castle.

Elixir Management
Elixir and clock management are key to every aspect of play. Never over play your hand so you have enough left over for a counter attack and be sure to have full Elixir saved for the last minute of play.

Art of War
Lessons from The Art of War by Sun Tzu include: Attack weakness and avoid strength, only attack when absolutely necessary, force your opponent to come to your game and to not play theirs.

Build an Attack
First, pay attention to the elixir counter, you cannot build an effective attack unless you have the elixir first. Place your ground offense behind your castles and wait until it moves past, then place Archers or Dart Golem behind as reinforcement. If needed back up with arial attacks with Arrows, Poison, Freeze or a Fireball.
